Achieving Accuracy in Your Quilting

If you have been quilting for any length of time you know that accuracy is key to getting good results in your projects especially when you are piecing and assembling your quilt top. Even if you notice a problem early in the construction process, there are usually no easy fixes and it can mean spending a significant amount of time ripping out seams.

It can be very discouraging that after all the hard work of choosing and cutting fabric, sewing the blocks and putting them together to find that the seams and/or blocks do not line up. All that hard work and you end up with a project that you are not happy with. It can be hard to “unsee” a misaligned seam once you have found one in your own project.

  • Are there projects where you poured heart and soul into the choice of fabric and the construction of the top only to end up with a result that you were not happy with.

  • Have you spent hours ripping our seams that where perfectly stitched but still did not line up?

  • Do you have times where you feel everything is going great only as you construct your blocks only to have “disaster strike” when you assemble the complete top.

  • Are you wearing out your seam ripper?

Often the problem is not obvious. It doesn’t matter if you sewed the perfect ¼ seam if the fabric pieces were not cut accurately in the first place or if they were stretched during the construction of the block. This is why accurate quilting is important from the start to the finish of making a quilt.

As you know, I am a big proponent of “learning by doing”. Developing the skills for quilting accuracy requires diligence, attention to detail and practice because if you don’t apply what you learn diligently in your projects then you will not improve. If you are willing to be diligent in applying the tips and committed to practice, then your results should show a big improvement.
