I’m Kim Jamieson-Hirst, the creator and host of The Quilter’s Way. You may know me from my Chatterbox Quilts’ YouTube channel where I’ve been sharing quilting tips and information for over 12 years. I’m passionate about quilting and love to share my knowledge with members in The Quilter’s Way. If you’re wondering what The Quilter’s Way is all about, let me explain.

The Quilter’s Way is an online membership where you can explore new quilting techniques through hands-on learning. When you join The Quilter’s Way, you’ll become a part of a helpful, supportive community of quilters who are also eager to learn new quilting skills.

In The Quilter’s Way there are three main parts:

Hands-on Learning, Community, and Events

  • I believe in learning through practical experience so I encourage members to learn new skills by making hands-on projects.

  • I believe that you learn best when you’re with people who share your interests so I encourage a strong, supportive community in The Quilter’s Way.

  • I believe that learning should be fun so there are regular member meetings to make connections and foster quilting discussions.

  • Work on carefully selected projects to learn a new technique

  • Work on all parts of the project including quilting options

  • Learn more than one way of doing each technique

  • Get support and knowledge from other quilters

  • Make connections and friendships with quilters from around the world

  • Have fun with other like-minded members!

  • Regular member ZOOM meetings (TQW Live)

  • Challenges – Wrangle Your Scraps, Fabric SOS Challenge

  • Member-only virtual retreats (Energize) including quilting, tutorials and fun!

Hands-on Learning

As a quilting teacher, I’ve learned that the best way to learn a new skill – and remember it – is hands-on learning. Creating a project reinforces what you’ve learned and helps you to retain that information so you can apply it to future projects.

Members work together on select projects where the goal is on learning a particular quilting technique. From cutting to piecing to assembly, all of the projects created in The Quilter’s Way include free step-by-step instructions for every part of the project.

Members work simultaneously on each project to stay focused, share ideas, and ensure everyone completes the project successfully. Participating in these projects (as a group) keeps you motivated and guarantees you’ll learn the technique. If you're having problems with making a project, just ask for help, and you'll easily receive lots of ideas and suggestions from other members.

While members enjoy working on a specific project at the same time as other members, there’s no “keeping up” in The Quilter’s Way. You can work at your own pace as project instructions and information are available whenever you are ready to begin.

You won’t find the words, “quilt as desired” in The Quilter’s Way.

Every project includes suggestions for quilting it (the most creative part of quilting in my mind). These quilting options may include free motion quilting, ruler quilting, and walking foot quilting so you’ll never be left wondering how to quilt your project.

I believe that there is more than one way to do any technique so there’s no “my way of the highway” in TQW. Members are encouraged to share their ideas and insights on the projects so we can all learn.

I also believe that this system works best when the project is on a smaller scale. I don’t mean that we work on miniature quilts (although that might be a technique for the future!) but that the project is large enough to learn the technique while taking the shortest amount of time. There are only so many hours in a day and there is so much quilting to enjoy!

Projects

Keeping the “learning by doing” model in mind, members have the opportunity to make carefully chosen projects that focus in on a particular technique. Members work together on these projects at the same time. This helps to keep everyone on track and allows discussion on various options for that project as everyone works on it. Working on a project with the other members of the TQW community will keep you engaged in it and ensure that you finish the project so you learn the technique. A little friendly competition might be just what you need to get you to the finish line.

One of the projects that TQW members have completed was the Dresden Plate Table Runner. In this project, members used colour selection, strip piecing, and blade cutting to create the project. Members learned methods of cutting blades and using templates, how to choose fabric to enhance the unique blade design, and how to appliqué and quilt the finished project.

Community

The community aspect of The Quilter’s Way is one of the things that members enjoy the most about the membership. In The Quilter’s Way we have a supportive group of members who like to exchange ideas and share knowledge with other members. We carefully screen new members who want to join The Quilter’s Way to ensure we welcome only positive, passionate quilters No Debbie Downers need apply!

Members of The Quilter’s Way enjoy chatting with one another without worrying about negative comments and know that other members are as committed as they are to making progress in their quilting journey.

In The Quilter’s Way, there are no stupid questions – only questions that will help you move forward with your learning.

You don’t need to be shy about asking questions in The Quilter’s Way – asking questions is how we all learn.

Being a community-based group not only means that there are lots of other members in The Quilter’s Way to help you with your questions but it also means that you can make new quilting friends, or quilting pen pals, as I like to call them. In this private membership you can feel safe in forming new friendships and having fun. Did I mention that we have lots of fun in The Quilter’s Way? Well, we definitely do! Yes, there’s lots of learning but there’s a ton of fun as well.

Events

TQW Lives

In The Quilter’s Way, we offer frequent live ZOOM meetings for members. During these sessions you can ask specific question, provide support to fellow members, connect with others, and discuss your projects. I frequently share tutorials during these lie sessions. These meetings are a great way to share valuable information – and I always learn something new at each one! If you can’t attend live, no worries – you can watch the replays at your own convenience.

Challenges

I believe that learning should be fun so there are challenges included free as part of your membership in The Quilter’s Way. The Fabric SOS Challenge (a $19.99 USD Value) and the Wrangle Your Scraps Challenge (a $24.99 USD Value) focus on helping you get your fabrics and scraps in order so that you can quilt efficiently. Both challenges are included free as part of your membership in The Quilter’s Way.

BONUS!

Each year, The Quilter’s Way hosts two virtual events. Energize is a 2-day online event where members can work on retreat projects or work on their own. It features guest speakers, games, and social activities to balance learning and fun. The best part? You don’t need to pack up your quilting supplies and sewing machine and travel; since The Quilter’s Way is online you can participate in Energize from the comfort of your own studio.

Yes, there’s a lot that goes on in The Quilter’s Way…but there’s more!

While having fun with other members is part of The Quilter’s Way, and it’s an important part (who doesn’t like to combine quilting and fun?!), there are other advantages of being a TQW member: the content.

In The Quilter’s Way we regularly release projects that focus on specific quilting techniques. The information and instructions for these projects allow members to explore techniques they may never have tried before. All project instructions are included free as part of your TQW membership. In addition to the project instructions, you’ll also find information on a wide variety of quilting topics, such as colour schemes, thread choices, quilting options, and more in the content library: The Library. You’ll have access to all the content we’ve accumulated over the past years and we continue to add new information to The Quilter’s Way on a regular basis.

As a TQW member, you have access to all past and future content – nothing is held back.

Why is the price in US dollars?

US currency is a universally understood and accepted monetary unit but prices in other currencies including Canadian & Australian dollars, British pound, and Euros are available as well.

Do I have to use a Janome sewing machine!

No! Members use a wide variety of machines. Part of the fun is comparing features and discussing the pros and cons of the machines with each other (especially if you are thinking of buying a new machine!).
